Cub Scouts Pack 641 - Grades K-5

Scouting is adventure, family, fun, character, leadership and so much more.

Scouts start with their best right now selves and grow into their very best future selves. It’s fun, hands-on learning and achievement that puts kids in the middle of the action and prepares them for today – and for life.  Scout me in!

CUB SCOUT FAQs

Q. What is a den?  What is a pack?

A.  Dens are the smallest unit of boys.  Dens are organized by grade level.

  • Tigers are first graders.
  • Wolves are second graders.
  • Bears are third graders.
  • Webelos 1 are fourth graders.
  • Webelos 2 are fifth graders.

The Pack is made up of all boys meeting as a group from first to fifth grade boys.

Q.  I’m a single mom.  Can my son be a cub scout?

A.  Yes!  Many boys participate with their mothers, and we welcome active involvement from all mothers.

Q.  What is the Rain Gutter Regatta?    How do I build a boat?

A.  The Rain Gutter Regatta is a wind powered boat race which takes place in the fall.  Boys design and paint a sail boat using a kit supplied by the Pack.  There are trophies provided to the winners of each Den and the overall competition.  The boys use their breath blow the sailboats down a rain gutter track.  There is also a competition for most artistic boat.  Boat building normally requires one to two hours of the boy’s time to build a functional boat, more time if they are making a very elaborate or intricate design.  No special skills are required to make the boat.

Q.  What is the Pinewood Derby?  How do I build a car?

A.  The Pinewood Derby is a race of wooden cars which takes place in February.  Trophies are awarded for the fastest cars in each Den and overall in the Pack.  There are also awards for best design of the cars.  Like the Rain Gutter Regatta, a kit is supplied from which to build the car.  The pack has a day when tools are provided to help you cut and shape your car.  No special skills are required to make the car.  Assembling the car is simple and will take less than one hour.  Painted designs on the car are encouraged and take more time the more elaborate they become.

Q.  Can my other children and my spouse come on the campout?

A.  Camp outs are family events.  Father/son or Mother/son pairs are common.  The entire family is also welcome to attend, including siblings and grandparents.  We promote family camping.

Q.  Are there any special requirements for the campouts?

A.  We do not have regulations on tent type or size.  You are free to bring any tent that suits your camping needs.  Cots are welcome.  However, RV’s and pop-up campers are not permitted.

If you cannot attend but your son wishes to attend, you are also welcome to arrange with another parent the supervision of your son on the camp out.  Boys are not permitted to camp without an adult who is directly responsible for them.

Q.  When are the campouts held?

A.  Weekend camp outs are held in the fall and the spring.  Normally, the fall camp out is less structured allowing the boys to enjoy time in the wilderness and allow parents time to relax.

The February camp out will normally be at a recognized Scout camp such as Camp Bovay in Navasota (approx. one hour drive from Houston).  These camps have more structured programs such as fishing, canoes, archery, BB gun ranges, hiking trails, rocket courses, BMX courses, etc.

Q.  Camping on an aircraft carrier?

A.   Yes!  We also have traditionally spent one night at the USS Lexington aircraft carrier in Corpus Christi.  It is a phenomenal facility and the highlight of the year for many boys.   We actually eat and sleep on the aircraft carrier overnight.  This carrier was an operational aircraft carrier in the US Navy in WWII.
